Will Audi bring Innovative Turn Signal Technology to the US?

Audi has big plans to bring an innovative set of turn signals to the U.S. market. While this technology will soon be available on the Audi A8 in Europe, it won't be making its way to the U.S. anytime soon, due to some legal restrictions.

So why is the US prohibiting it? A Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (Number 108, specifically) that states ". . . the effective projected luminous lens area of each compartment or lamp shall be at least 22 square centimeters, provided the combined area is at least 50 square centimeters."1 If you don't "speak" metric, that's 7 3/4 square inches.

In the 1960s, the Ford Mustang added these kind of taillights and gets away with it because the first of its three large headlights meets the size minimum, meaning the other two don't matter. With the Audi technology, multiple small LEDs blink, instead of one larger one.

Audi is dedicated to remaining a pioneer in this area of the auto industry, and we're keeping our fingers crossed that this technology will make its way to the United States. After all, other automakers have already copied Audi's distinctive LED daytime running lights, and we expect should this turn signal technology come to the U.S., a similar situation would occur.
